RESEARCH SUPERVISOR (1-Year Renewable Contract)
IITA is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs of sub-Saharan Africa. We develop agricultural solutions with our partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture. We have more than 100 internationally recruited scientists from about 35 countries and 900 nationally recruited staff based in various stations across Africa.The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks suitable Nigerian Nationals for the following position at the Institute’s Headquarters, Ibadan.
Position
RESEARCH SUPERVISOR (1-year renewable contract)
DUTIES
Successful candidate will among other things:
- Supervise all field research activities for Striga resistance and N use efficiency breeding programs;
- Handle Striga and low N tolerant germplasm in the breeding nursery, including planting, pollination and collect data;
- Supervise screening in the laboratory and screen-house and initiate new screening methods;
- Supervise subordinates and temporary labour
- Collect data, analyze statistically;
- Assist to manage special projects, including the Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa and HarvestPlus-Maize project;
- Carry out effective screening to transfer Imazapyr resistance (IR) gene into the lowland adapted maize germplasm;
- Assist graduate students on research projects as required;
- Assist Scientists to maintain strict control of budget expenditures and
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
BSc/HND Agriculture with considerable working experience in a similar field of research, using computer software for data processing.
Candidate must be honest, possess good communication skills, hardworking, committed and able to take initiatives.
He/She must be willing to work on weekends and during holidays (with appropriate compensation).
